Legendary Yankees Pitcher Sends Brutally Honest Anthony Volpe Message Amid Benching
Anthony Volpe has not been good for the New York Yankees this season. However, the team has stuck by him as its starting shortstop for most of the year. On Sunday, he did not start for the team, and reportedly will not be in the lineup for the next game either.
Volpe came into Sunday's game in the eighth inning as a defensive replacement. Volpe is obviously not happy about being benched, but acknowledged it's all on him to earn his role back, per The Athletic's Brendan Kuty.
The decision to bench Volpe came after months of struggles defensively and at the plate. While Volpe may not be happy, legendary Yankees pitcher David Cone got brutally honest about Volpe's feelings and the importance of winning.
"This is not the time to be worried about anybody's feelings about anything," Cone said on the ESPN broadcast, per NJ.com's Adam Zagoria. "This is the time where you've got to win every game you can, and that's the decision you make every night, before you put your head on the pillow, is what's my lineup going to look like tomorrow?"
Volpe's bat with the Yankees had never been great, but his defense was something the team had been able to rely on. However, he is the big league leader in errors this year.
The Yankees acquired Jose Caballero at the trade deadline, and he is not much better at the plate. However, if he can make the routine plays consistently, he would be an upgrade over Volpe this year.
Cone won four World Series with the Yankees, so he understands what it takes to win. He is a five-time World Series champion overall, a five-time All-Star and a Cy Young Award winner.
