Celtics $304 Million 4-Time All-Star Faces Bizarre New Distraction Over Family
Following their loss to Miami Heat in the 2023 NBA Eastern Conference Finals, the Boston Celtics started the process of guaranteeing that they would not fall out of contention by signing their All-NBA star Jaylen Brown, who they had drafted with the No. 3 overall pick in 2016, to a five-year, $304 million “SuperMax” contract.
The move paid off. Building a powerhouse team around Brown and fellow superstar Jayson Tatum, the Celtics went on to win the record 18th NBA title in franchise history the following season.
A Bumpy Road to NBA Stardom for Brown
But it hasn’t always been a smooth ride for Brown, who has been forced to overcome significant obstacles and distractions. On draft night in 2016, when his selection was announced, Celtics fans in attendance loudly booed the pick.
During his rookie season, his closest friend from high school in Marietta, Georgia, — which for Brown that point was just two years earlier — died unexpectedly, reportedly by suicide.
And just last year, there was an attempted break-in at his home in Wellesley, Massachusetts, where Brown’s mother was living. On top of that scare, Brown said, “we’ve had media members and reporters outside our house trying to get an inside scoop. Like, have some respect.”
Brown Must Now Lead Decimated Celtics Squad
Heading into the 2025-2026 season Brown must deal with the absence of Tatum due to a torn Achilles tendon, as well as the near-complete dismantling of the Celtics championship-winning roster – basically the same roster that won 61 regular season games in 2024-2025 as well — due to the league’s new “second apron” financial restrictions.
On top of all of that, Brown himself is rehabbing from an arthroscopic surgery procedure on his right knee as he prepares for the opening of Celtics training camp next month.
Brown’s Father Faces Serious Legal Charges
So the last thing Brown probably needed was yet another distraction, especially one caused by a member of his own family.
But that is exactly what he got on Thursday when media reports revealed that Brown’s father, 57-year-old Quenton M. Brown — known by his middle name, Marselles, was arrested the previous day on suspicion of attempted murder.
In an incident reported by Las Vegas TV station KSNV, the elder Brown is alleged by police to have stabbed another man in the stomach during a heated argument over a “door ding” in a parking lot at All American Park, a large city park with sports facilities and hiking areas.
According to the report, the victim was sitting in a car with a female companion when another driver parked an SUV next to his vehicle and opened the passenger’s side door.
Citing an eyewitness account by the victim’s girlfriend, the TV station reported that the SUV door made contact with the victim’s car door, causing a “ding.”
When the victim got out of his car, the other man — later identified as the elder Brown — “was immediately confrontational, said ‘it was just a bump’ and called the boyfriend a ‘b**** a**.’
Brown Alleged to Swing Knife 25 Times
Another eyewitness cited by the station said that the two men challenged each other to a fight, but as the victim turned his back, the man identified as Brown “swung his knife at the skinnier man ’25 times.’ Doctors told (Las Vegas police) that the man suffered stab wounds to his back, upper right clavicle area and left hand, plus a broken right rib that might need surgery,” KSNV reported.
Brown reportedly fled the scene, but officers later identified and stopped his SUV on a freeway. Brown was “suffering from abrasions on his knees and bleeding from his face.”
Whether the elder Brown is represented by an attorney remained unclear.
According to a separate report on the arrest by TMZ Sports, “Jaylen doesn’t have a close relationship with his father and was unaware of the arrest or incident.”
Jaylen Brown is undoubtedly aware of the arrest by now, however.
