With Anthony Richardson Potentially Available, 2 Year-Old Pete Carroll Quote Resurfaces
With Aidan O’Connell struggling through two preseason games and the Colts essentially benching Anthony Richardson before the start of the season, it’s fair to wonder if the Raiders might be a team interested in the former first round pick.
One Seattle host said on Tuesday he could “absolutely” see Pete Carroll making a move for Richardson, and a series of statements Carroll made about Richardson in 2023 resurfaced on Tuesday night.
“We considered him,” Carroll told Seattle Sports Radio in May of 2023.
“Shoot, we flew all the way out there to go see him. Not just to see him but to be around him and watch him and how he handled himself, and his program with all the hype that was going. We gave him tremendous consideration. He might be the best athlete that’s ever been drafted at that position. He’s arguably that. So, we had to definitely consider that.”
There was speculation after the 2023 draft that the Seahawks wanted Richardson with the no. 5 pick but never got the opportunity when the Colts drafted him with the fourth pick.
Two years later, Carroll could have an opportunity to trade for Richardson if he wants him, but a lot has changed in terms of Richardson’s NFL stock since 2023.
Whether or not the Raiders are interested in Richardson, it might make sense for them to sniff around the quarterback market after roster cuts. There will be veteran quarterback options, and some could be better than what the Raiders have now.
O’Connell might be a serviceable backup, but it’s hard to envision a scenario where he develops into the quarterback of the future in Las Vegas.
