The Last of Us Part 3 Protagonist Divides Gamers

The third entry in The Last of Us series may still only be a twinkle in some Sony exec’s eyes, but fans are already divided over who the protagonist of the next game should be.

Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us duology has become a staple of modern gaming. It’s a series so popular that it’s been remastered and remade several times over.

But while Naughty Dog is hard at work on its upcoming sci-fi game,

Still, that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating about everything from the setting to who the main character should be.

One fan posted on The Last of Us Reddit page with an image of JJ, a character who appears towards the very end of 

“Do you think he should be the new protagonist in the third game when he's a bit more older?” the fan posted. “If so, how would you want his story to go?”

“The Last of Us is Ellie’s story at its centre. It highlights characters like Joel and Abby with gameplay and story, but the overarching plot is Ellie’s,” wrote a fan in the comments of the post. “I can see JJ coming back as part of the ensemble along with Tommy, Maria, Dina, Abby, and Lev, but the protagonist of 

“Depends on where they take the story. If there’s another 20 year time skip then maybe, but I see him more likely being part of an ensemble than a main protagonist,” another fan agreed.

“Honestly I’d prefer a whole new cast and setting, maybe in a different country,” wrote another fan. “I personally think Ellie's story is kind of complete, I would like to see Abby and Lev again cuz their story just started but a whole new setting would imo be better. just a complete fresh start for a third game, maybe even a fourth.”

From looking through the comments, as well as any general opinions on the series at the moment, it sounds like fans really want Ellie to be the protagonist of The Last of Us Part 3.

However, considering The Last of Us Part 2 had dual protagonists that we all ended up enjoying, there’s always a chance that the same could be done for Part 3.

, which reunited Andrew Lincoln’s original series hero Rick Grimes with Danai Gurira’s iconic Michonne.

While The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live season 2’s future is currently unclear, the franchise is not finished with Lincoln’s character yet. 

Daryl Dixon season 3, episode 3, saw Carol reference Rick’s brother Jeffrey for the first time, proving that Rick could well be brought back into the mix eventually.

Andrew Lincoln Gets To Step Into A Completely Different Role For Coldwater

However, for the time being, Lincoln is heading in an entirely different direction with his latest role. The ITV drama thriller Coldwater sees Lincoln play John, a middle-aged, seemingly ordinary man who struggles with his sense of self after failing to intervene in a violent incident he witnessed.

While The Walking Dead’s Rick was famously handy with a knife and gun and and unafraid of doling out some brutal violence throughout The Walking Dead’s long, bloody story, 

Coldwater’s John could not be more different. As such, the character makes for an exciting change from Rick, while the show itself sees the star go for a very different genre.

Since The Walking Dead concluded, Lincoln has mostly only been seen onstage in the UK. His last movie was released back in 2020, while his most recent TV roles came in 

Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, outside of one episode of Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities back in 2022.

Thus, Coldwater is a really intriguing choice for Lincoln, a star who has proven that he can hide simmering rage under an unassuming veneer throughout The Walking Dead. Coldwater

 co-stars Trainspotting’s Ewan Bremmer as a dangerous, mysterious new arrival who has a dark influence on John’s outlook and life path.

Viewers waited years to see Lincoln return to 

The Walking Dead franchise as Rick Grimes already, and now the series is now setting that up to happen again. However, it's much more exciting to see him do something new and different after having played Rick since 2010, and having exited from and returned to the franchise already once before.

Coldwater Will Finally Begin Streaming In The United States Soon

As Variety reports Showtime has acquired rights to stream Coldwater, Lincoln’s most exciting project since playing Rick in The Walking Dead 

franchise will soon be available to stream in America. ITV mystery dramas are synonymous with twisty, character-driven thrills, and Coldwater promises to show a whole new of The Walking Dead’s most recognizable face soon.
