Tennessee legend Hendon Hooker's future with Lions in jeopardy after Dan Campbell's latest comments
The Detroit Lions have wrapped up their preseason games and will now shift focus to finalizing the 53-man roster. One name that could very well be on the chopping block is quarterback Hendon Hooker. Hooker was one of the best quarterbacks in college football during his senior season, a campaign that was unfortunately cut short by an ACL tear. At the time, he was in strong contention for the Heisman Trophy before suffering the injury while trying to cut upfield.
Coming into the offseason, Hooker was expected to emerge from training camp as the primary backup to Jared Goff. However, it quickly became clear that Kyle Allen had outperformed him. Earlier in the preseason, head coach Dan Campbell didn’t shy away from stating as much.
“He’s playing better," Campbell said. "So I would say that right now, if you’re saying – if you had to go in with a two right now, who would you trust more? Yeah, I would trust Kyle more because he’s proven more after these two games. But I’m still – we’re still going to coach (Hendon) Hooker up and we’re still going to see what’s there and see if we can get him better. I mean, we still got a little bit here."
Now that the preseason has concluded, the writing appears to be on the wall. Campbell’s latest comments only added fuel to the speculation surrounding Hooker’s future in Detroit.
“How much development do you believe there is. Alright. Because look, we’re talking about Hooker right now,” said Campbell. “How much development do you believe there still is. Sometimes, does a player need a change of scenery?”
Campbell’s words suggest a move is imminent—likely over the weekend or early in the week before the roster cut deadline. Had Hooker not suffered his injury, there's a good chance he wouldn’t have landed in Detroit in the first place. But that’s how things sometimes play out in the NFL.
