SHOCKING QB Shakeup: Dolphins Bench Zach Wilson, Rookie Quinn Ewers Gets First Active Game Amid Miami's Turmoil
The Cleveland Browns could face a new quarterback in Week 7 when they host the Miami Dolphins.
Ahead of Miami going onto the road to play the Browns in Week 7, Miami is set to make a quarterback change. Although Tua Tagovailoa will remain the starting quarterback, rookie Quinn Ewers will serve as the backup quarterback, while Zach Wilson will be inactive, according to
“The #Dolphins are making a change to their QB depth chart for today’s game, as Quinn Ewers will serve as the backup to Tua Tagovailoa for their matchup against the #Browns, per the insiders. This is the first game active for the rookie seventh rounder,” Rapoport
Miami making a change at backup quarterback is a surprise, as Wilson did have some success in his lone appearance this season. He went 5-for-8 for 32 yards, but the Dolphins are now deciding to put Ewers as the backup.
Ewers was selected 231st overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. He served as the starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns for three seasons, and he will now get a gameday jersey for the first time this season.
Browns Coach Reveals Challenge Dolphins Pose
Although Miami will have Ewers as the backup, the Browns will still be preparing to face Tagovailoa at quarterback.
Heading into the game, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski revealed the challenge the team poses. Stefanski believes the Dolphins are a well-coached team and have plenty of offensive talent on the roster.
“They’re a team that presents a lot of challenges to you schematically, from a personnel standpoint as well, a ton of respect for what they do down there schematically,” Stefanski
“Really good players on all three levels of the defense. Special teams, speed, fast returners, but really well-coached group that I have a ton of respect for. We have to play our best, so we’re going to focus on our preparation, focus on how we work this week to go play our best on Sunday.”
Despite both teams being off to a slow start, Cleveland is a 2.5-point favorite at home against Miami.
Tagovailoa Walks Back Comments on Dolphins
Ahead of the Dolphins’ road game against the Browns, Tagovailoa walked back comments he made about his teammates.
Tagovailoa criticized players for showing up late to meetings or not showing up, which he’s frustrated by. Following his comments, Tagovailoa took time to apologize and walk back on them.
“I’ve made a mistake and I’m owning up to that right now,” Tagovailoa said. “I’ve talked to guys on the team about it, talked to the leaders about it, and they know my heart. They know that the intent was right…
“I’ve got to look at myself as the leader protecting the team. I don’t feel like I did that to the best of my abilities. I felt like I let the emotions of the game get to me after the game. And that’s something that I can learn from as a leader on this team. What happens in-house should be protected and none of that should have gotten out.”
The Dolphins enter their road game against the Browns with a 1-5 record.

"The Heat has released Precious Achiuwa before his contract started to become guaranteed on opening night," The Miami Herald's Anthony Chiang shared via X on Friday night.
"Achiuwa signed a non-guaranteed one-year deal with Miami last month."
"Heat also waived Ethan Thompson, Dain Dainja and Bez Mbeng tonight."
At just 26 years old, Achiuwa now finds himself as a free agent after helping the Knicks notch their first Eastern Conference Finals berth since 2000 in 2024-25.
In 57 appearances for New York last season, the versatile frontcourt presence averaged 6.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, 0.8 steals and 0.7 blocks in 20.5 minutes.
Along with Achiuwa, several former collegiate standouts like Ethan Thompson, Dain Dainja and Bez Mbeng were dropped from the Heat's roster. The latter of the three was a surprise, due in large part to Miami's announcement that they had
Following a senior season with Yale that saw the 6-foot-4 guard win Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year honors for the third consecutive year and take home his first Ivy League Player of the Year award in 2024-25, Mbeng could have been considered a shoe-in to make the Heat's final roster off the strength of his defensive dominance, alone.
Instead, it appears as though the 6-foot-4 guard could be headed for the Heat's G-League affiliate Sioux Falls Skyforce, where he could receive a fair shot to excel as a defender against NBA-level talent.
Spanning his 29 appearances with Yale as a senior last season, Mbeng compiled box score figures of 13.0 points, 5.8 assists (Ivy League lead), 5.6 rebounds and 1.8 steals (Ivy League lead) while knocking down 36.8% of his three-point attempts.
