Packers Projected To Release AFC West Rivals’ Former 3rd Round Pick
The Green Bay Packers have a difficult decision to make at numerous positions across the roster – just like many other franchises around the NFL – but certainly one of the more interesting selections may be at running back.
Beyond Josh Jacobs and, perhaps, Emmanuel Wilson, no one is truly safe from cut-day for Green Bay.
Ever since MarShawn Lloyd suffered a hamstring in preseason that will likely ensure he ends up on the ‘designated to return’ portion of injured reserve, the final one – or potentially two – spots at RB have been very much up for grabs.
Packers Running Back Room Suffered A Loss With Lloyd Injury
One of the more intriguing names in the Packers’ enlarged training camp backfield rotation comes in the form of Tyrion Davis Price, a former third rounder for NFC West rivals, the San Frnacisco 49ers, who have knocked GB out of the postseason in three of the past six seasons – and two of the last three.
Despite his high-draft pedigree, Davis Price’s stint at Lambeau could be coming to a close, as Matt Schneidman of The Athletic believes that he will not survive final cuts coming in the next week or so’s time.
“Head coach Matt LaFleur said Lloyd would miss “some time” after injuring his hamstring again in the second exhibition game.” Schneidman wrote on Saturday, “If Lloyd is one of the two players placed on IR with a designation to return during roster cuts, he must miss at least the first four games. However, that would allow the Packers to keep their two valuable backup running backs from 2024 instead of having to cut one, since Lloyd would make the team if healthy.”
Schneidman believes instead that the team will opt to remain with the same trio they operated wth last season, Jacobs, Wilson and ex 2023 UDFA, Chris Brooks.
Tyrion Davis-Price Predicted To Not MAke It To The Final 53
Davis Price is one of two former mid-round transplants who have found ther way onto Green Bay’s running back room for training camp, along with former Jets fifth round pick, Israel Abanikanda.
The former LSU back managed just 120 yards in a 49ers uniform between 2022 and 2023 before getting released in December 2023 and moved to the practice squad. He was then signed and cut by the Eagles, and subsequently the Titans, before finding his way onto the Packers on August 12.
Davis Price has had little time to really demonstrate what he can do, and make a mark on the position group – even one that is perhaps not the strongest, depth wise, for Green Bay.
But having been able to do little preseason – attaining just 7 total rushing yards – and having had not much time to imprint himself on the team, it makes sense that the predictors don’t give him much of a shot of making the final count.
