New details emerge on Celtics' former wing's status with current NBA team
Earlier this month, the Detroit Pistons signed Javonte Green to a one-year deal. New details have now emerged about the nature of that agreement.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the former Boston Celtics wing's deal is partially guaranteed for $925,000. The total value of his contract is $2.9 million. As a six-year veteran who signed for the veteran minimum, Green will only carry a cap hit of $2.3 million.
Lowering the cap hit for players with at least three years of experience who sign for the veteran minimum is a way to incentivize teams to opt for older players in free agency.
What the Pistons are getting in Javonte Green
Green split the 2024-25 campaign between the New Orleans Pelicans and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He averaged 5.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.0 steals in 18.5 minutes of playing time across 68 games last season. The six-foot-five wing shot 42.9 percent from the field. That includes taking 2.1 threes and converting them at a 32.6 percent clip.
The Virginia native recently celebrated his 32nd birthday. He has spent his six years in the NBA suiting up for four franchises. Green began his career with the Celtics. In 73 games spanning two seasons, he produced 3.7 points and 2.0 rebounds per contest. He also provided many high-flying, highlight-reel dunks.
After that, the former Radford star joined the Chicago Bulls during the 2020-21 campaign. He has spent more time in "The Windy City" than with any other franchise.
In his four years with the Bulls, Green averaged 6.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, and nearly 1.0 steals. While his three-point volume was low, launching only 1.4 attempts, he raised his conversion rate to 36.3 percent.
Who the Pistons are getting is a player generating 5.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, and nearly 1.0 thefts per tilt for his career. Green's athleticism and ability to knock down corner threes are an important part of what he brings to the table. However, his most significant contributions come from his defensive versatility and overall impact on that end of the floor.
The energy he provides off the bench and the motor he plays with are also infectious and appreciated by the teams he has been on.
While Detroit signed Green, a former Celtic, Boston recently reached an agreement with a former Piston, Ron Harper Jr. The six-foot-four wing was on a two-way deal with the franchise that calls "The Motor City" home.
Before that, he was suiting up for Boston's G League affiliate in Maine. With Harper returning to the Celtics on an Exhibit 10 deal, there is a significant chance that's where he is playing when this season starts.
