To the chagrin of some Star Trek fans who felt the season was overindulgent and not 'Star Trek enough,' Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 is mainly remembered for its bold experiments into various TV genres.
From the romantic absurdity of "Wedding Bell Blues," to the comedic farce of "Four-and-a-Half Vulcans," to Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) dancing with Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3's reputation is not copious amounts of death.
Yet only two Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 episodes, "Wedding Bell Blues" and "Four-and-a-Half Vulcans," lacked deaths, while one episode had a body count reaching thousands. Here's who died in
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3.
Many Gorn
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 1 - "Hegemony, Part II"
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3's premiere saw Lt. La'an Noonien Singh, Lt. Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia), Dr. Joseph M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun), and Lt. Sam Kirk (Dan Jeannotte) fight their way out of a Gorn ship. In the process, they killed many Gorn with phaser fire.
While it's not clear how many Gorn the Starfleet Officers took out as they fled towards a shuttle, the most notable was the Gorn who nearly killed Lt. Ortegas. La'an executed that Gorn at point-blank range with her phaser rifle. Erica lost a great deal of blood flying the Gorn shuttle back to the Starship Enterprise, but she survived.
Meanwhile, it seemed like Captain Marie Batel (Melanie Scrofano) was a goner from her Gorn infection, but the innovative thinking of Lt. Spock and Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) prolonged Batel's life, at least until the end of
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3.
Bytha & Klingons
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 3 - "Shuttle To Kenfori"
Captain Pike and Dr. M'Benga flew a shuttle into Kenfori, a planet teeming with death, in
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, episode 3. Pike and M'Benga were on the hunt for a Chimera blossom, a rare plant that could turn Captain Batel into a hybrid human/Gorn to save her life.
Little did M'Benga and Pike know they were walking into an abandoned Federation lab that created zombies, including zombie Klingons. Meanwhile, Bytha (Christine Horn) and a duo of Klingons working for her arrived at Kenfori seeking vengeance on Dr. M'Benga for killing her father, Ambassador Dak'Rah (Robert Wisdom), in
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2.
Only Captain Pike and Dr. M'Benga survived their ordeal on Kenfori. Bytha and her minions were consumed by the Klingon zombies, with Bytha sacrificing herself so that the Starfleet Officers could escape to the Starship Enterprise. While Bytha and her Klingons were fresh kills, there were already plenty of undead on Kenfori.
Tony Hart, Lee Woods, Sunny Lupino, Joanie Gloss
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 4 - "A Space Adventure Hour"
Technically, no one actually died in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, episode 4, "A Space Adventure Hour," since the murder mystery Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh solved as her detective character, Amelia Moon, was on the holodeck. Although safety protocols were disabled, no one 'real' died in the holodeck, thankfully.
La'an investigated the murder of Hollywood studio head Tony Hart, and the suspects included the producers and cast of the canceled sci-fi series, The Last Frontier. As La'an chased the culprit, three more suspects were offed: actor Lee Woods (Melissa Navia), producer Sunny Lupino (Rebecca Romijn), and super agent Joanie Gloss (Celia Rose Gooding).
The murderer was revealed to be Lt. Spock, who was a hologram and part of the program. While La'an escaped the holodeck unscathed, something that did end up dying was Starfleet's plan to install holodecks in 23rd-century Federation starships, which wouldn't happen until
Star Trek: The Next Generation's 24th century.
N’Jal
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 5 - "Through The Lens Of Time"
Life or death stakes returned in
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, episode 5, "Through the Lens of Time." When a landing party team led by Nurse Christine Chapel and Dr. Roger Korby (Cillian O'Sullivan) entered an ancient temple on Vadia Nine, they soon found themselves trapped in a multidimensional prison for a malevolent race called the Vezda.
The first casualty of "Through the Lens of Time" was N'Jal (Ish Morris), who was the M'Kroon liaison to Starfleet. N'Jal was killed by the temple's defenses when he realized what evil was being held inside, and he tried to escape. Thankfully, the intelligent problem-solving by Nurse Chapel's team spared them the same fate as N'Jal.
Ensign Dana Gamble
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 5 - "Through The Lens Of Time"
Ensign Dana Gamble (Chris Myers) was the second, and more eventful, casualty of
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, episode 5. Gamble was blinded by a broken artifact in the ancient temple on Vadia Nine. He was beamed back to the Starship Enterprise for medical care, but little did anyone know Gamble was infected by the Vezda,
The effervescent young medical Ensign and protégé of Dr. M'Benga, who was so excited to join his first landing party mission, was already dead and consumed by the Vezda when he returned to the USS Enterprise. The Vezda had access to Gamble's memories and was able to briefly fool M'Benga and others, but poor Dana Gamble truly died on Vadia Nine.
7,000 Scavengers
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 6 - "The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail"
The most sizable body count in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 was mounted in episode 6, "The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail." Lt. Commander James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) became acting Captain of a starship for the first time in this historic
Star Trek episode.
Acting Captain Kirk led the USS Farragut on a successful rescue of the Starship Enterprise, which was captured by the Scavengers, mysterious marauders who consumed technology to continually fuel and upgrade their massive starship. Kirk's risky gamble set the Enterprise free and destroyed the Scavengers' ship.
However, Kirk was horrified to learn that his rescue caused the death of 7,000 Scavengers. Worse, the USS Enterprise's crew discovered the Scavengers were descendants of 21st-century humans who left Earth for a new life in the stars. Kirk now has the deaths of thousands of people on his conscience going into
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds seasons 4 and 5.
Jikaru
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 7 - "What Is Starfleet?"
Perhaps the most heartbreaking death of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 was the suicide of the Jikaru in episode 7, "What is Starfleet?" The Jikaru was a massive bioluminescent organism the size of a starship found in the seas of the planet Tychus-B.
The Jikaru was unwilling participants in the Metamorphosis Program established by the Lutani, who wanted to breed the enormous "space dragons" as weapons in their war with the Kesar.
However, the Jikaru was sentient and intelligent, and it chose, instead, to tragically commit suicide in the sun rather than be used as a weapon of war by the Lutani.
Gorn Pilot
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 9 - "Terrarium"
Another tragic death was the female Gorn pilot (Warren Scherer) that Lt. Erica Ortegas befriended in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, episode 9, "Terrarrium." The Gorn and Ortegas were manipulated and trapped on a moon in a mysterious wormhole for a strange experiment by the Metron (Dariush Zadeh).
The Gorn pilot was killed by Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh, who reacted upon seeing the Gorn and believed it was about to attack Ortegas. This was the second Gorn La'an killed in order to save Erica's life.
Although the Metron wiped Ortegas' memory of meeting the space god, it allowed Erica to retain her memories of friendship with the Gorn.
Captain Marie Batel
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 10 - "New Life And New Civilizations"
Technically, Captain Marie Batel is still alive in her new role and destiny as the Beholder, the warden who keeps the malevolent Vezda encased in their multidimensional prison on Vadia Nine.
However, for all intents and purposes, the human starship Captain who Christopher Pike was in love with died in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3's finale. Pike mourned Marie's loss like the death of a loved one, which she was.
There is no more Captain Batel, although Marie's final gift to Chris was an alternate reality where they had a child and lived a happy life growing old together.
Captain Batel learned that the events of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 that turned her into a human/Gorn hybrid were the gateway to her cosmic role as the Beholder, and she willingly ended the life she knew to protect the galaxy from the Vezda.
