Kalen DeBoer makes College Football Playoff case for Alabama
It’s campaign season in college football. And with Alabama sitting on the bubble for inclusion in the College Football Playoff, Kalen DeBoer is giving his best public pitches ahead of the Crimson Tide’s Saturday appearance in the SEC championship game.
During a teleconference with reporters on Sunday, a day after Alabama beat Auburn on the road, DeBoer was asked about his message to the selection committee.
“I just think when you’re really trying to have a playoff, you need your best teams in there,” DeBoer said. “There’s no doubt in my mind that we are one of the best teams. I don’t say that arrogantly. I just really believe that’s what it is. There’s a ton of metrics I know people look at: strength of record, FPI. We’re right at the top.
“Especially if you’re even considering us to even be a bubble team, we definitely are above those teams that are in that realm as far as those bubble teams. Playing in your conference championship in the SEC shouldn’t be something that we’re worried about as far as what that would do to our playoff hopes. We got here by earning it.”
Alabama currently sits at 10-2 on the season, 7-1 in SEC play. The Crimson Tide was 10th in last week’s CFP rankings, just one spot ahead of the cutline where teams will lose their playoff spots to automatic bids.
When the Associated Press and coaches top 25 polls were released on Sunday, Alabama was also 10th, where it has been since losing to Oklahoma earlier in November. The Tide is hampered by a Week 1 loss to Florida State, which finished out of postseason contention, losing to Florida in its season finale.
Some have noted that the SEC championship game appearance could come back to haunt Alabama depending on the whims of the committee. The Crimson Tide must put its resume on the line one extra time, something other teams in contention don’t have to do.
Still, DeBoer said he felt that UA was a playoff team, win or lose.
“We’re in the championship game with a 7-1 record. Won four conference games on the road in the toughest conference. I mean, it’s the toughest conference in the country. For us to be in this spot and to do what we do, won 10 of our last 11 games. You can get into a lot more details on it.”
