Former Lions QB Hendon Hooker Finds New Home
Hendon Hooker didn’t stay on the market long. Just one day after being waived by the Detroit Lions, the rookie quarterback has landed with the Carolina Panthers, where he’ll join their practice squad, according to multiple reports.
Hooker, a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, had been fighting for a roster spot in Detroit throughout the preseason. After the Lions’ final exhibition against Houston, he told reporters he believed he had “made a strong stance” for a place on the 53-man roster, pointing to his steady improvement in practices and limited game reps.
Detroit, however, chose to move forward with just Jared Goff and Kyle Allen in the quarterback room, releasing Hooker as part of Tuesday’s roster cuts.
Now, the 27-year-old quarterback gets a new opportunity in Carolina. The Panthers, who continue to build depth behind starter Bryce Young, see Hooker as a developmental option with upside. Known for his poise, arm strength, and leadership from his time at Tennessee, Hooker will have the chance to grow in a new system while competing for future snaps.
For Hooker, it’s another chapter in what’s already been an uphill NFL journey. He battled back from a torn ACL in college, worked his way through rehab, and now finds himself with a fresh start. If nothing else, his move to Carolina keeps the door open for the story he still believes he’s meant to write.
