Dolphins Proposed To Trade For Baltimore Ravens CB After Injury Havoc
After the Miami Dolphins traded away their best cornerback, Jalen Ramsey, to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for All-Pro safety, Minkah Fitzpatrick, their cornerback room became one of the weakest in all of football.
Then their next best CB, Kader Kohou, went down with a knee injury that will rule him out for the entirety of the 2025 season. That was just a week after Kohou’s backup in the slot, veteran Artie Burns, was also tragically ruled out for the year with a torn ACL.
So it is not a surprise that in the eyes of Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay, the Dolphins should make a trade for Ravens cornerback, Chidobe Awuzie, in the next couple of weeks before the official start of the 2025 regular season.
Dolphins Could Be Smart To Make Move For Ex 2nd Round Pick
“The Dolphins lost a key cornerback this offseason when they traded Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers.” Kay wrote on Thursday, “While they added another star defensive back in Minkah Fitzpatrick, Miami still need to bolster its cornerback position ahead of the new season.”
Kay believes that bringing in now-backup cornerback and former second round pick, Awuzie, could help alleviate some of the issues they could face on the back end of the defense. And, after the AFC North side made a splash play in the later stages of the offseason, in signing a well-regarded but injury-plagued cornerback, the Baltimore man could be movable for the right price.
“Chidobe Awuzie could be available after the Ravens managed to snag Jaire Alexander following his release from Green Bay. Baltimore may prefer to keep the veteran as insurance and depth, but roster space will be tight after cuts are due and the offer of an early Day 3 pick could lead the club to move on from Awuzie.”
What Would Chidobe Awuzie Add To The Cornerback Room?
Right now, the cornerback unit remains in flux. After the departure of Ramsey and the injuries to Burns and Kohou, the Dolphins bought in former Raider, Jack Jones, and experienced nickel, Mike Hilton.
Hilton is expected to start in the position currently vacated by Kohou. And whilst he is older now – 31 years old to be exact – he has been a very consistent inside cornerback for the best part of the past decade for both the Steelers and the Bengals. In fact, last season saw Hilton put up career highs in both solo and assisted tackles, and joint second-bests in both passes defended (8) and interceptions (2) – all aged 30.
But on the perimeter there could be more issues. Although former Jets fourth rounder, Kendall Sheffield, has come out of nowhere to quite possibly become the starting corner opposite 2024 undrafted free agent, Storm Duck – the pair are hardly a scary-looking proposition for opposing offenses.
Awuzie has 77 career starts and has experience on the perimeter. He would slot in nicely next to either Duck or Sheffield and bring some know-how on how to cover top-tier receivers – as well as being regarded as a generally high character individual in the locker room.
Letting go of a fifth round pick would be small price to pay to help stop their exterior of the secondary facing what could perhaps be imminent demolition in 2025.
