Warriors Dealt Bad News on Potential Giannis Trade
The Golden State Warriors, like 28 other teams, have been waiting with bated breath for the Milwaukee Bucks to make Giannis Antetokounmpo available via trade. Sadly for the Warrriors, a Giannis trade is looking increasingly unlikely.
According to Rafael Stone, the GM of the Houston Rockets, the Bucks have not fielded any Giannis trade offers, and don’t plan to in the foreseeable future. Stone revealed the same when asked if the Rockets inquired about the two-time MVP this offseason.
“No,” Stone told ESPN Houston when asked about the possibility of his team trading for the 2021 NBA Finals MVP. “I deal well with Jon Horst (Bucks GM), I really like him. Jon was very clear that they weren’t doing anything. So, that was that.”
Stone’s comments come as a devastating blow for the Warriors, who, per reports, have coveted Antetokounmpo for years and view the “Greek Freak” as the ideal running mate for aging superstar Stephen Curry, who turned 37 this March.
Warriors Have Been Lurking
Although Antetokounmpo has yet to officially request a trade from the Bucks, teams such as the Warriors have reportedly been hovering, hoping for the Bucks to end their relationship with their long-time star. According to The San Francisco Standard’s Tim Kawakami, the Warriors have deliberately been hesitant to trade their restricted free agent, Jonathan Kuminga, for less value, with hopes of landing Antetokounmpo.
“There’s another reason why the Warriors don’t want to give Kuminga away for less than his full trade value: Like every other smart team, they’re trying to maintain every asset they’ve got so they’re ready once and if the Giannis Antetokounmpo market heats up,” Kawakami wrote on July 25, 2025.
The veteran Warriors writer added that the franchise believes Kuminga could be a franchise-building block for the Bucks if they ever consider a Giannis trade.
“If you’re looking to build a trade around a young player who could step right into a barren roster and give a transitioning team a burst of energy. Well, I think the Warriors might have a candidate to bring up if Milwaukee ever asks,” he said of Kuminga.
Giannis’ Preferred Spot?
Contrary to earlier reports that Antetokounmpo may have an interest in joining the Warriors, Kawakami noted that there’s too much uncertainty around the situation.
“Giannis might never leave Milwaukee. Or, if he decides he has to, he might have players other than Curry and Draymond he’d like to join,” he wrote.
“But the possibility exists that Giannis could want out and could tell the Bucks that they should trade him to the Warriors. And then it would be up to the Warriors to meet Milwaukee’s price, if possible.
“The Warriors aren’t the only team thinking about and positioning for this, of course. They certainly wouldn’t be the team with the most assets to offer if and when Milwaukee begins to contemplate a deal. But the Warriors want to be ready for this. And bringing Kuminga back for, say, three years at $22-25 million a year, would be a fairly interesting step in this very presumptive process.”
