Shocking Trade! Heat Steal High-Scoring Guard in Blockbuster 3-Team Deal
It’s been a successful offseason for the Miami Heat. Pat Riley has added Norman Powell via trade and landed a high upside rookie in Kasparas Jakucionis via the NBA draft.
However, the Heat are still multiple moves away from being a contending team once again. Unfortunately for Erik Spoelstra’s team, Miami may need to part with some high-end talent in order to begin retooling the roster for a future championship push.
A recent three-team trade proposal from Alan Goldsher of “Fantasy on SI,” would see Miami take the first steps toward a new-look rotation.
Goldsher’s trade idea looks like this:
Bulls Receive: Scottie Barnes
Heat Receive: Coby White, Zach Collins and a lottery-protected 2027 first-round draft pick from the Bulls.
Raptors Receive: Tyler Herro and a lottery-protected 2028 first-round draft pick from the Heat.
Goldsher listed three quick reasons why the Heat would consider making this trade.
“1: Given a proper system, White can deliver similar production to Herro’s, and he’s one year younger,” Goldsher reasoned. “2: Collins could mentor and/or replace raw 21-year-old Kel’el Ware in the middle. 3: Currently, Miami doesn’t own a 2027 first-round pick. Problem solved.”
Herro has been a bright spot for the Heat in recent years. It’s difficult to envision the franchise parting ways with the former Sixth Man of the Year. However, his impending contract extension eligibility could play a part in Riley’s decision-making.
Heat Have a Tough Tyler Herro Decision
According to NBA Insider Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, Herro will become eligible for a contract extension in October. The issue is that Riley has been notoriously reluctant to hand out contract extensions, which could lead to some tough questions being asked.
“Tyler Herro becomes eligible for a three-year extension worth near $150 million with the Miami Heat in October before the start of the 2025-26 season. This is a situation teams are keeping an eye on, as Pat Riley has always been cautious with giving out extensions (see Jimmy Butler’s situation for details),” Siegel wrote. “A decision to extend or not to extend Herro will tell the tale of how the Heat view themselves in the East.”
In 77 games last season, Herro averaged 23.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 5.5 assists. He shot 47.2% from the field and 37.5% from deep. The 25-year-old has assumed a significant role within Erik Spoelstra’s rotation since Jimmy Butler left the franchise. It’s unlikely he would want to lose a key contributor who is still a few years away from his prime.
Coby White is An Expiring Contract
If Herro’s extension eligibility is a sticking point for Riley, adding White would make little sense. The former lottery pick is entering the final year of his current contract. He will become an unrestricted free agent next summer. Furthermore, his performances over the last two seasons will undoubtedly mean that he’s due a pay rise.
So, Goldsher’s trade idea would see the Heat flip a future contract problem for a more immediate one. It’s for that reason why Miami would be unlikely to entertain such an idea. In truth, giving up Herro would likely be part of a superstar deal, not a lateral move to add a future draft pick that can’t be used in the lottery.
And for that reason, we shouldn’t expect to see the Heat enter a trade with the type of framework being proposed. Herro is too important to what Miami is trying to do, and unless the return is a genuine superstar, giving up on him makes little to no sense.
