Former Rams QB Carson Wentz Resurfaces After Quiet Offseason
Wentz spent the 2023 season with the Rams, two seasons after Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell left his post as offensive coordinator in LA for Minnesota. That system familiarity could help Wentz earn a roster spot and the Vikings feel comfortable giving one to him.
The Vikings are dealing with an inexperienced QB room behind starter J.J. McCarthy.
O’Connell praised backups Brett Rypien, Max Brosmer, and Sam Howell. Still, the Vikings remain interested in options like the ex-Rams passer, Wentz.
“Carson Wentz spent the 2023 season with the Rams, who run an offense that is similar to the Vikings’,” ESPN’s Kevin Seifert posted on X on August 23. “The Vikings went through camp with Sam Howell as QB2, and Kevin O’Connell said last night that he had improved, but…”
32 year old Carson Wentz has spent the last two seasons backing up Matthew Stafford and Patrick Mahomes. Learning from Sean McVay and Andy Reid.
That alone gives me more confidence in him than Sam Howell right now. https://t.co/PhYZ6x0zjW

Moreover, Wentz’s former Eagles teammate, Josh McCown, is the Vikings’ quarterbacks coach.
The Rams and Vikings met twice in 2024, once in the regular season and again in the NFC Wild Card Game. They would need a postseason date for Wentz to possibly face the Rams in 2025.
Rams QB Situation Settled For Now
GettyMatthew Stafford #9 of the Los Angeles Rams looks on against the Dallas Cowboys.
Stafford’s return solves the quarterback question for the Rams on many levels, most notably being his presence on the field.
It also puts the pecking order back in place, with Jimmy Garoppolo slotting back into his QB2 role and Stetson Bennett, who started and played all of the Rams’ first two preseason games, in a more appropriate third role.
Dresser Winn, who played the entire finale, is the only other QB on the Rams’ roster.
Stafford guided the Rams to a 10-win season and the doorstep of an NFC Championship Game berth. Losing him for an extended period would severely hinder the Rams’ title chances.
With him back in the mix, though, the Rams have their starter. They also have his top backup, Garoppolo, and a developmental project in Bennett. Winn is on hand for emergencies. That means the Rams do not need to turn to options like Wentz.
