Fire Country Season 4 Episode 3 Review: The Tiny Ways We Start to Heal
Sharon gets a new sense of closure on Fire Country Season 4 Episode 3, “The Tiny Ways We Start to Heal.”
Entering this season, we knew there would be some influential transformations with the departures of Vince and Gabriela.
Oftentimes, situations like this can be a make-or-break for a show or disrupt the natural flow fans are accustomed to. That’s why it’s refreshing to see Fire Country execute a perfect beginning to the season.
In the first two outings, we’re given the harsh reality of it all and forced to grow with the changes. There are some moments of recuperation, but it doesn’t truly set in until this episode.
Gather Around the Table
There’s no denying that the overall seasonal arc is pinpointed on the path of recovery and growth. But it’s also another reminder that grief comes in waves and many different forms. Time is the only thing that can heal a wound of this nature.
We see that directly exemplified on “The Tiny Ways We Start to Heal.” Specifically with Bode and Sharon’s healing journeys.
Months after his death, it’s now Vince’s birthday, and instead of taking the day off to do something memorable, Sharon is going through his belongings to donate. Thankfully, it isn’t a task she has to tackle alone.
Constance Zimmer returns as Vince’s high school ex-girlfriend, and while some may find it weird, it feels like such a Fire Country move. Not only does her guest appearance bring the perfect sense of sentimentality and healing, but it also brings a little drama.
However, with Sharon and Bode needing the most help right now, I’m not totally on board with Renee potentially being a thorn in Sharon’s side.
If Renee had been a problem in the past and directly caused issues between Sharon and Vince, I could see why the series would bring that situation back to life. But that’s not the case.
The disconnect lies in trying to create posthumous deception and drama around Vince. Sharon has dealt with enough. Let her have a few episodes of grieving and not having to endure new trauma.
Guardian Angels
Bode’s secrets are beginning to catch up to him quickly this season. Thankfully, though, he has Audrey and Manny looking out for him.
Being an addict herself, Audrey knows what to look for when someone is using, and is good at being able to see through the lies. Because of that, she knows that Bode isn’t being truthful about tossing the pills.
Not thinking clearly, Bode can’t envision the overall picture. If caught, the pills could lead to much more than a relapse. Right now, he’s allowing his emotions to dictate his actions, and that never ends well.
One aspect of this dynamic that I find fascinating is that Audrey is struggling as well. She’s still dealing with the aftermath of shooting Finn, fighting the PTSD, and working to get re-centered at Station 42 under new leadership.
Life is hectic for everyone, but when push comes to shove, those closest to Bode are willing to put their lives on the line for him. Now, we’ll see if he can take the opportunity to get help willingly, or if we’ll see him stray down a dark path again.
The real question right now, though, is how Bode will take their advances. Will he spiral even further after being confronted? Or will he take their reaching out as a wake-up call and seek the help he needs?
While Bode might be under the guise that he is rightfully owed the position of Battalion Chief, there’s no denying that Jake has earned it. He’s put in the time and effort over the years, doing the grunt work and growing alongside Vince.
Richards can see the potential in him as well. In his conversation with Jake, it’s the first time we’re seeing a genuine compliment be given, without any sass to back it up. That’s how we know his words aren’t being used to butter Jake up. Richards truly believes he can run Station 42.
