Ex-Lions QB Matthew Stafford Gets More Concerning News
Former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has been dealing with injuries during the offseason, and a lot is on the line.
For more than a decade Matthew Stafford, served as the quarterback for the Detroit Lions, and even though those weren’t the most successful years for the franchise, Stafford still holds a special place in the heart of Detroit. Now, of course, Stafford is with the the Los Angeles Rams, and he helped bring them a championship win during his first season with the team, which didn’t feel so great. But, now the Lions are making their own history, and hopefully they’ll get to the big game soon.
During the offseason, the former Detroit Lions signal-caller has been dealing with a serious injury. He hasn’t been in training camp, and on Thursday, August 14, Rams coach Sean McVay offered up a troubling update on Stafford’s status. It’s troubling for the Rams, but not so much for the Lions.
Stafford is trying to get healthy after dealing with an aggravated disk in his back, so he hasn’t been on the practice field at all. That should be a concern for anyone who follows the Rams and wants to see them have a successful season.
An Update on Former Detroit Lions Quarterback Matthew Stafford
After practice on Thursday, August 14, McVay told reporters that he’s simply hoping for the best. He didn’t make any promises and didn’t say that Stafford was coming along well yet.
“Hopefully it responds a little bit better, and then I’ll have more information for you guys then,” he said.
He was also asked to elaborate on Stafford’s back problem and questioned about if it caused more pain or was a functionality issue.
“I think probably a little bit of both,” he replied. “We’re trying to get our hands around this as well, so I don’t really have much more information other than think we’re trying some different things that are hopefully going to be in alignment with getting him back out on the field.”
So, things still seem quite up in the air for Stafford. The good news is that he’s supposed to practice with the team on Saturday, August 16, so hopefully it will go well.
What’s Ahead for Matthew Stafford?
Kyle Crabbs of A to Z Sports lays out the good and bad about Stafford’s condition in a Friday, August 15 feature.
“The good news, if there is any, is that the Rams expect Stafford to work out again tomorrow — with the hope being that his body responds better to a new stress opportunity than his last one,” he says. “If he does, the Rams will be able to press onward this month with a full follow-through on their intention that Stafford will indeed be ready by the start of the regular season.”
He adds, “But if Stafford’s body pushes back once again, it will be hard to ignore. Stafford, who is 37 years old this season, has been through a lot of wear and tear.”
Stafford’s contract with the Los Angeles Rams is a short one, so he pretty much just has to get through the year. The former Lions player signed a two-year, $8.4 million contract with the team during the offseason, including $8 million guaranteed and an average annual salary of $4.2 million. So long as he’s not playing the Lions, we wish Stafford the best.
