EX-Laker Recalls Michael Jordan’s Legendary Jordan Dome Games
Michael Jordan‘s return to the NBA in the mid-1990s is one of the most memorable moments in basketball history, and few places are as unforgettable as the ‘Jordan Dome’.
They built the private gym for him during the filming of the 1996 movie Space Jam. Tracy Murray, who once played forward for the Los Angeles Lakers, recently provided a unique perspective on what it was like to be inside that legendary training facility.
The best players in the game gathered to compete against the ultimate competitor in the sport. Murray, who is a Los Angeles native and a standout at UCLA, was chosen as an extra for Space Jam by the NBA. He and other celebrities had the opportunity to spend weeks inside the Jordan Dome, a Warner Bros. Facility.
Built to keep Jordan in peak condition while shooting the film. The basketball legends that took place there were marathon pickup games that blurred the line between Hollywood set and hardwood proving ground.
“Michael was tough. Period,” Murray recalled to Brandon’ Scoop B’ Robinson when reflecting on Jordan’s 1995 comeback from baseball. “When he was making his comeback, we were playing pickup games at the Jordan Dome when he was filming Space Jam because a lot of us were in the film as extras and things like that, and he was tough then. That was after a couple years of playing baseball, you know — he still hadn’t lost a step. He was just knocking the rust off, but he was STILL Michael Jordan.”
The Jordan Dome Experience
The dome itself became a place of legend. The NBA had never seen a training space like this before, as it was furnished with a regulation court, weight room, and recovery facilities. Reggie Miller, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, and countless others came to compete.
The games quickly gained a reputation for being some of the most competitive pickup runs in basketball history. Murray found the opportunity to witness Jordan’s work ethic in person to be unforgettable. Despite being away from the NBA for two seasons, Jordan’s intensity remained unmatched.
“You could tell right away he wasn’t just there to stay in shape,” Murray said. “He was measuring himself against the best players in the league, seeing where his game was, and pushing himself to get ready for the season.”
The sessions were a prelude to Jordan’s triumphant return to the Chicago Bulls in the 1994-95 season, and most importantly, his dominance in the following years. Jordan’s legacy as arguably the greatest player in basketball history was strengthened by the Bulls winning three consecutive championships from 1996 to 1998.
Murray’s Own Journey
Basketball lore was heavily influenced by Murray’s career path, even though his role at the Jordan Dome was associated with Space Jam. After starring at UCLA, he spent more than a decade playing for several NBA teams. According to Basketball Reference, he played in 31 games for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2002-03 season, with an average of 2.0 points and 0.7 rebounds in limited minutes.
While his time with the Lakers was short, it was nonetheless a full-circle moment for the Southern California native who grew up worshipping the franchise.
Murray has played for the Houston Rockets, Toronto Raptors, Washington Bullets, and others, earning a reputation as a reliable perimeter shooter during the league’s transition into a faster, more three-point-oriented game.
A Legacy Beyond Stats
Murray’s memories of competing in the Jordan Dome resonate as profoundly as any personal stat line. Those battles represented not only Jordan‘s comeback but also the height of NBA competitiveness during an era bursting with Hall of Fame talent.
The level of play was incredible,” Murray said. “You had some of the best players in the world there every day, pushing each other, going at it. And Michael was setting the tone for all of us.”
Fans continue to be captivated by the stories from the Jordan Dome almost thirty years later, which serve as a reminder of Jordan’s greatness being as much about his unrelenting preparation as it was about his championship rings.
Tracy Murray’s career has been filled with unique experiences, including playing a role in history and having a front-row seat to the rebirth of basketball’s greatest icon.
