60 Years Later, Star Trek Finally Shows Something No One Has Ever Done Before
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 features a blink-and-you-missed-it, first-time-ever event that fans have waited 60 years to see. Directed by Sharon Lewis and written by Kathryn Lyn and Alan B. McElroy, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, episode 7, "What is Starfleet?" is an innovative documentary that asks hard questions about the purpose of Starfleet and the USS Enterprise.
After filming the Starship Enterprise's crew throughout Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, Beto Ortegas (Mynor Luken) premieres his documentary, "What is Starfleet?", which turns out to be an emotional journey into the heart and nobility of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew.
Along with moments of death and tragedy, "What is Starfleet?" also depicts joyous scenes of life aboard the Starship Enterprise. This includes a family celebration in Captain Pike's quarters, where his senior staff toast glasses of wine and enjoy a gourmet meal prepared by Chris. Yet there's also something unusual in Captain Pike's smorgasbord.
Number One On Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Eats A Colored Food Cube For The First Time In 60 Years
Captain Pike's feast in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, episode 7 also includes the notorious colored food cubes seen in Star Trek: The Original Series. For the first time in 60 years, someone actually eats a colored cube. Lt. Commander Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) takes a bite out of a red cube, something that never happened in 1960s Star Trek.
When Una tasted a red food cube, it looked like a piece of watermelon, strawberry, or tomato cut into shape. In Captain Pike's kitchen, the colored food cubes may be various fruits that he rendered into cubes as hors d'oeuvres or as an amuse-bouche. Number One didn't seem too pleased with the red cube she sampled, however.
Did Strange New Worlds Secretly Reveal The Origin Of Star Trek’s Colored Food Cubes?
It's possible that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds just subtly revealed that colored food cubes are an innovation of Captain Pike's kitchen. Perhaps the cube-shaped foodstuffs were then added to the USS Enterprise's meal synthesizers so that they became part of the menu aboard Captain James T. Kirk's (William Shatner) USS Enterprise.
Colored food cubes debuted in Star Trek: The Original Series, but they aren't seen in Star Trek: Enterprise, set in the 22nd century, or in Star Trek: Discovery seasons 1 and 2. Enterprise boasted an unseen Chef who prepared meals for Captain Jonathan Archer's (Scott Bakula) NX-01 crew, and Discovery, set a few years before Strange New Worlds, had food synthesizers to provide meals.
